Xu Xiake was a famous geographer in Ming Dynasty and spent more than thirty years traveling around most of China. Some people now are increasingly obsessed with their looks. We can trace this trend to a few factors.

For one thing, appearance plays a key role in the first impression in others’ eyes. There is no doubt that being good looking brings great advantage on many social occasions, such as making friends or establishing romantic relationships as people can be easily attracted by this most external quality. For another, appearance can even serve as a critical factor in one’s career development. In no way can we deny that some organizations prefer handsome or pretty employees because they hope that these faces can leave a good impression on their business partners or consumers.

lt must be admitted that such obsession over looks, even though reasonable to some extent, exerts more negative impact than positive influence. There will be more and more people, especially the young ones, who are willing to do whatever it takes to have a beautiful face, ignoring the more precious qualities such as learning, honesty and dignity, which in turn will take a heavy toll on our value system.

lt is my sincere hope that we can focus equally on internal and external beauty so that we won’t suffer from the appearance anxiety.
